If Then Map

Written by Taylor | Nov 17, 2025 1:34:47 PM

Use this activity to plan ahead for moments that might throw you off course.

When you decide ahead of time how you want to respond, it becomes easier to stay steady and make choices that support your goals.

How to Use This Activity

Create a three-column table with these headers:
If This Happens | Then I Will | Why This Plan Works

Think about common obstacles or situations that tend to derail you. For each one, write an “if this happens” statement. Then decide on a small, realistic action you can take in the moment, along with why that action helps you stay grounded.

If-Then Map Examples

If This Happens Then I Will Why This Plan Works
I feel too tired to study I will do 10 minutes of review instead of skipping It keeps me in the habit without overwhelming me
I start thinking I am not smart enough for this class I will remind myself I can learn this with practice and support It helps me focus on effort instead of fear
I get distracted when I sit down to work I will set a five-minute timer to get started It lowers the pressure and builds momentum
I fall behind on an assignment I will reach out to my instructor to ask about next steps It turns stress into a clear plan and keeps me engaged

Save your map where you can revisit it.

Add new plans as new challenges come up.

Reflection Questions

  • What tends to throw you off course during the week?

  • When do you usually feel stuck, discouraged, or distracted?

  • What is a backup plan that could help you stay grounded when that happens?

Every time you create an if-then plan, you give yourself a stronger path through the hard moments. You are not aiming for perfection. You are building strategies that help you take the next step with clarity and purpose.
